Rob entered three carvings in the prestigious 22nd Annual Desert Woodcarving Show and Sale held at Mesa Centennial Hall in Mesa, Arizona this past February 12th & 13th and walked away with three awards at the Advanced Carving Level.
"The Day after Christmas" takes a whimsical look at a carved caricature Santa Clause celebrating in a mythical "Red Parrot" Bar at the South Pole in Mexico. The carving won a First Place in its category and a Third Place overall in the entire group of four different categories.- "Reservation Wal-mart" places a caricature Navajo Indian standing beside a reservation sign advertizing a local trading post. The carving placed second in its category of Full Figured Human Caricatures.
- "Sitting on the Fence" composed of two realistic White Crowned Sparrows sitting on barbed wire was entered in a very competitive category of two or more realistic birds in a natural setting. The carving won Honorable Mention in this category.
Carving Commissions have become a very successful part of Rob’s work. They are often more personalized because the client asks for a certain kind of carving or expression of art. In 2011 Rob has accepted a series of commissions that will keep him busy. You will find photographs of them in the "collections" section of the website as they are completed along with the other commissions accepted over the most recent years.
- A life sized Green Heron going to a client in Virginia who has identified this bird as "her favorite bird" and wants to see a little "attitude and action in the setting".
- A Santa Fe style religious sculpture about 12 to 14" tall of St. Francis Assisi.
A 10" carved female Park Ranger to be given to a special person on their retirement.- A carved large, life-sized Ponderosa or Jeffrey Pine Cone mounted on a fancy mesquite base to be used as the prototype for a special Fire and Aviation Award for the National Park Service.
- A carved scaled down interpretation of a Ranger Flat Hat hanging on a coat hook over a Class A Ranger Uniform coat annually used to adorn a special award presented by the Coalition of National Park Service Retirees.
- A carved caricature river runner carved for a noted Flagstaff Doctor who also works as a boatman on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.
In his free time Rob has hopes of starting a Life-size Prairie Falcon, Pileated Woodpecker, House Finch set, and a couple of rowdy cowboy caricatures that will also be available for sale when completed. Stay tuned to the web site for more developments!
